Neck Lanyard with Card Holder and Key Fob

Welcome to another tutorial.  This week I am going to show you how to make a Lanyard with card holder and key bog.  I choose Valentine colors in honor of the upcoming holiday.  Lanyards can be used for work badges or as a wallet for a quick shopping trip.  When you start your project start by shopping for your lanyard hardware first because the width of the lanyard depends on the style of hardware.  I choose a swivel clasp I found in the purse accessories at my local craft store for $1.99.  I measured the distance at the largest part of the loop at 1 inch so I (X's by 4) and that is the width I cut the fabric.  using this formula you can make adjustments for your lanyard hardware.  So here goes, as always read the complete tutorial before beginning, measure twice cut once.  Happy sewing.

Neck Lanyard with Card Holder and Key Fob

Supplies: Sewing machine
               Thread to match fabric
Rotary Cutter, Ruler and Mat (optional)
               Scissors
               3 Fabric choices
                  A) lanyard strap, Length of fabric(42) X 4x width desired for
                       hardware I used 4 inches
                  B) Base of card holder 2 pieces cut at  3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches
                  C) Pocket and loop  1 piece 2 x 2 in. for loop and 1 piece 3 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.
               Extra Heavy Weight Stabilizer double sided iron-on 2 1/1 x 4 1/2 in.
Medium Weight Stabilizer one sided iron on 2 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.
               Package of lanyard hardware.

All pieces cut and ready to go.

Measurement of the widest part of the loop is 1 in.
Example 1x4=4 so I cut the fabric at 4 inches wide

Fold the fabric over and iron a nice crisp edge

then open and fold in both sides to the center and iron a
crease again.

it should look like this now use a spray bottle to help get a crisp
edge or a steam iron.

Sew along the edges to finish off.  Place it on your neck and decide
how far you want it to hang down in front of you, add 2 inches for a fold
over then cut off the excess. This left over piece will be used for your
key fob.  I cut mine at 33 inches.

When you lay your lanyard out decide how you want it to hang on
your neck then place on a flat surface.  lay one side 2 inches higher then
the other side

fold up the longer side to match up with the short side edge and place a pin

place the hardware on and fold up

add a pin and it should look like this now.

Attach your zipper foot to your machine this will help get close
to the metal loop and sew a square through the four layers

OK first part done, repeat all steps with your left over piece for your key fob.

For the card holder cut both stabilizers at a 45 degree angle.
1 inch from each corner on the top only.

center on fabric and iron in place be careful not to touch the iron to
the sticky stuff and cut the top corners of the fabric  1/2 inch from
each edge.  see picture it should look like this now.

carefully fold up edges and iron in place

place raw sides together and iron from the medium stabilizer side
till they stick together and set aside.

get the loop piece and fold in half, open and iron edges to the center
and fold again like the lanyard strap.

sew along the edges like you did with the lanyard strap.

fold the pocket piece in half right sides together and sew along each side
leave the top open for turning.

turn right side out and tuck in top 1/2 in. to hide raw edges.
sew across the top opening ONLY the rest will be sewn later.

place pocket on top of card holder base and it should look like this now.

go to the machine and start at the top right side of pocket sewing
down one side around to the top of the other side of pocket and stop
with needle down.

insert the loop at this point and continue sewing

sew back over the loop to secure it in place and finish off back
where you started. Place it on your lanyard and you are ready to go.

Place your cards in the pocket and attach your keys to your key fob.

Tips: you can add a clear pocket to the other side by cutting a piece of clear plastic like the kind you get when you buy bed sheets or curtains and attach it when you attach the pocket.  The card holder can also be used as a luggage tag or a diaper bag tag using some long ribbon instead of the loop.
